Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes.

Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body.

This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins. It’s likely that these naturally released substances are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture.

A course of acupuncture usually creates longer lasting pain relief than when a single treatment is used.

Acupuncture and Fertility have been linked and has been known to have a positive effect on improving the chances of conception. It can be used to enhance the function of the whole body and improve overall health in order to affect reproductive health. It can be used to prepare patients for their assisted fertility treatment (IVF) or to enhance their natural fertility. Blood tests and further investigations are necessary in some cases. A healthy pregnancy and giving birth is the goal, not just the conception.

Acupuncture and Fertility / Preconception Care
• Increase blood flow to the reproductive organs

• Balance hormone levels

• Help improve the lining of the uterus and quality of eggs released
• Improve conditions such as polycystic ovaries and endometriosis
• Increase the chances of successful IVF

There is no quick fix. All patients are unique and realistic time frames are discussed with each individual. I usually recommend an initial period of at least 3-4 months for those having difficulties. Treatment is on a regular basis initially and spaced out thereafter. This enables me to observe the menstrual cycle and treat accordingly. It can often take between 6 and 9 months.
